Notes from the review of this manuscript

The manuscript describes two studies: a randomized controlled trial (RCT) and a non-experimental comparison group design (NED). This review addresses the findings of the NED. The review of the RCT is addressed under Lind et al. (2017; Study 1). The NED in this manuscript was previously reviewed by HomVEE and received a low rating under Version 1 standards. When HomVEE re-reviewed this model in 2025, the NED received a low rating under Version 2.3 standards. The study rated low because the study design includes a confounding factor: all participants in the intervention group were foster children, while all participants in the comparison group were raised by their biological parents in low-risk environments. This means that differences in outcomes could be influenced by differences in family structure and access to foster care services, rather than the intervention itself. As a result, it is not possible to determine whether the observed effects are due to the Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) intervention or to the foster care context.
